The Widow of Saint-Pierre

2000 · 1h 52m · Romance, Drama, History

IMDb 7.1 Metacritic 73 RT 91%

Watch it tonight if you're in the mood for a thoughtful, character-driven drama that trusts its audience to sit with moral complexity. The stellar critical scores (91% RT, 7.1 IMDb) and the ingenious premise—a condemned man waiting for his own execution while his humanity slowly transforms those around him—make this a rewarding slow burn, not a crowd-pleaser.

Plot

In 1850, on the isolated French island of Saint-Pierre, a murder shocks the natives. Two fishermen are arrested. One of them, Louis Ollivier, dies in custody. The other, Neel Auguste, is sentenced to death by the guillotine. The island is so small that it has neither a guillotine nor an executioner. While those are sent for Auguste is placed under the supervision of an army Captain.
