Skip it tonight unless you're a die-hard fantasy completist. The Golden Compass has an imaginative world and an engaging lead in Dakota Blue Richards, but the film suffers from bloated pacing and a muddled plot that even the stellar cast (Nicole Kidman, Sam Elliott) can't quite salvage—it's the kind of ambitious adaptation that lost the plot somewhere between page and screen.

Plot

In a parallel universe, after overhearing a shocking secret, precocious orphan Lyra Belacqua trades her carefree existence roaming the halls of Jordan College for an otherworldly adventure in the far North, unaware that it's part of her destiny.
