Skip it tonight—unless you're specifically craving a gritty character study about addiction's spiral. The Gambler is a competent drama with solid performances, but it's a heavy, repetitive slog that doesn't quite justify its own existence when better films about obsession already exist.

New York City English professor Axel Freed outwardly seems like an upstanding citizen. But privately Freed is in the clutches of a severe gambling addiction that threatens to destroy him.
