The City of Tales

1968 · 1h 55m · Music, Family, Fantasy, TV Movie

Skip it unless you're a devoted fan of Persian theater or experimental musical dramas—this adaptation of a classic play sounds intellectually interesting but risks being a slog as a TV movie without the live performance energy that makes theatrical pieces sing. The lack of scores and limited English-language information suggests it's a niche import that won't translate well to casual viewing tonight.

Plot

Shahr-e ghesse is perhaps the most popular of all Persian plays, was written in traditional rhythmic style that resulted in a kind of musical drama. Although it seems at first glance to have been written for children, its main audience, it is in fact a parable about contemporary socio political issues.
