The Bonfire of the Vanities

1990 · 2h 5m · Comedy, Drama

Skip it. This 1990 adaptation of Tom Wolfe's acclaimed novel is a famously bungled mess—De Palma's direction clashes with the material, the tone is all over the place, and what should be a sharp satire becomes a bloated, cringe-worthy slog. You're better off reading the book or spending your time on a comedy-drama that actually lands.

Plot

After his mistress runs over a black teen, a Wall Street hotshot sees his life unravel in the spotlight; A down-and-out reporter breaks the story and opportunists clamber to use it to their advantage.

Director: Brian De Palma

Cast: Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, Kim Cattrall, Saul Rubinek
