Soul Surfer is a formulaic inspirational drama that doesn't quite justify the true story's potential—critics were right to be lukewarm. Skip it unless you're in the mood for by-the-numbers sports redemption and don't mind some heavy-handed faith messaging.

Plot

The true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion again, through her sheer determination and unwavering faith.
