Mermaid Down

2019 · 1h 31m · Horror, Fantasy, Mystery, Thriller

Skip it. 'Mermaid Down' sounds like it's trying to be a edgy body-horror thriller, but the premise—a mermaid locked in a psych ward—feels more like a half-baked concept than a fully realized film. Without strong reviews to vouch for the execution, the grimdark torture setup and institutional horror angle come across as exploitative rather than genuinely compelling.

Plot

A mermaid is ripped from the ocean by a fishing crew only to be tortured and to have her tail cut off. A seemingly helpful stranger intervenes, but then locks her away in an institution for mentally disturbed young women, where no one believes she is a mermaid. With no way out, she is forced to count on her survival instincts, and fight for her life at all costs.

Director: Jeffrey Grellman
