Kevin Costner's ambitious multi-chapter Western is a sprawling, old-fashioned epic that swings for the fences—and while it's uneven and bloated at nearly 3.5 hours, it's got enough gritty character work and genuine frontier atmosphere to justify a watch if you're hungry for a serious, no-frills Western that doesn't pander. Skip it if you want tight storytelling, but YES if you want to sink into something deliberately paced and operatic.

Plot

In 1859, families discover the lure of the Old West as they settle in territories from Wyoming to Kansas. Meanwhile, a gruff cowboy finds himself on the run with a prostitute and a young boy after killing a fellow gunman.
