Skip it. Despite a promising premise about revenge and scheming in 19th-century Paris, this 1998 adaptation of Balzac's novel suffers from muddled tone and uneven execution—it can't decide if it's a bitchy comedy or a serious drama, and ends up as neither. Unless you're specifically hunting for mid-90s period piece camp, your time is better spent elsewhere.

Plot

In 19th century Paris, Bette Fischer, a poor and homely spinster, forms an alliance with the seductive courtesan Valerie Marneffe to orchestrate revenge on her handsome and wealthy relatives.
