Watch it tonight. Blue Ruin is a lean, clever revenge thriller that subverts the genre by making its protagonist a desperate, flawed everyman rather than a cool antihero—and it's all the more gripping for it. Director Jeremy Saulnier crafts genuine tension and dark humor from the collision between one man's determination and his complete lack of competence, making this an indie gem that punches way above its weight.

Plot

When the quiet life of a beach bum is upended by dreadful news, he sets off for his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. However, he proves an inept assassin and finds himself in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family.
