Skip it unless you're in the mood for feel-good schmaltz—Big Miracle is a well-intentioned but predictable true-story drama that mistakes earnestness for depth. The whale-rescue premise is charming and the cast (John Krasinski, Drew Barrymore) is likable, but the Cold War subplot and forced romance feel like padding around what should've been a tighter, more gripping survival story.

Plot

A small-town news reporter and a Greenpeace volunteer enlist the help of rival superpowers to save three majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle.

Director: Ken Kwapis
