Skip it—this Roland Emmerich conspiracy thriller is a turgid, historically dubious slog that mistakes elaborate production design for actual drama. The Oxford-wrote-Shakespeare theory is intellectually bankrupt, and the film spends nearly two hours proving it with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

Plot

Set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I, and the Essex Rebellion against her, the story advances the theory that it was in fact Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford who penned Shakespeare's plays.
